If you are planning to visit Madrid in April, Easter is the best period! The capital offers you a lot of activities. The second week of April is the Holy Week, which is a big event in Spain. Since most people take vacation time, half the city clears out. For those of you that will be coming there, you’ll get to enjoy the festivities without big crowds, which is a welcome relief.
There are many festive events going on in Madrid during Easter. Of course, the most famous events are the procesiones, or religious processions with statues of Jesus and Mary. At these religious parades, costaleros—who are members of religious brotherhoods—carry heavy statues of Mary or Jesus on floats or platforms. Many of the statues, which can weigh up to 2000 kilos, were made by master artisans centuries ago.
Do not forget to watch the famous colourfoul processions! Some of these processions of Madrid are very famous, as for example the one of the Christ of Medinaceli, that is celebrated on Good Friday. It brings together thousands of nazarenes and faithful ones who will contemplate the throne on which Jesus will be carried: three and a half tons in weight and four meters high, carved in wood in 1944 and that rolls on wheels the Barrio de las Letras (the area between Alcalá Street, Puerta del Sol, Carrera de San Jerónimo and Paseo del Prado).
If during the Easter Sunday you are is still in Madrid, you can finish your trip enjoying the spectacular tambourin procession that at noon fill the Plaza Mayor with noise. This main event on Easter Sunday takes place at mid-day in the Plaza Mayor. The "Tamborada del Domingo de Resurección", whereby whichever Brotherhood has been chosen for the year, assembles dozens of drums of all shapes and sizes and beats out a constant rhythm which almost shakes the timbers of the nearby houses. This represents the earth tremors that were supposed to have occurred when Christ died on the cross.
What about the food, Torrijas is a typical Easter dessert in Madrid. They can be eaten with milk, with wine or just as they are. You will find them during Easter in many pastry shops, cafes and taverns of the city, although if you visit the city at another time you can find them all year round. Along with that, there are traditional Easter Eggs, Bartolillos (empanadas) from Madrid, rosquillas de Semana Santa (Easter doughnuts), leche frita (fried dessert with milk and eggs), pestiños (pastries with sesame and honey) and buñuelos (fried pastries) are other typical delicacies to be sampled at this time of year. At Easter time Spanish homes, cake shops and restaurants bring out their old recipes to prepare delicious sweets that are as good to look at as they are to eat.
