A New Year celebration in Barcelona has its own traditions, some similiar and others different to other countries. The first New Year tradition is eating 12 grapes when 12 "campanadas" (New Year´s bells) ring, trying not to swallow them at once. It is said that those who manage to finish all the 12 grapes on time and without choking will enjoy a New Year full of luck! The second tradition of New Year's Eve is wearing red lingerie: whether you are superstitious or not, starting a New Year with red lingerie is a custom here, as red is a symbol of prosperity and love. The third tradition is putting gold elements in the glass of cava! Once the 12 grapes are eaten, you toast for the New Year that begins, there are those who put a ring or a piece of gold inside the glass to attract money and presperity. The last but not the least is a wish list: many people write down their goals and hopes for the New Year, also there are many people who burn a list with bad things that happenned this year to leave it all behind.
Barcelona has its official New Year's Eve party - the Midnight show: it is the most famous and brightest event, when almost 70,000 people come every year to the Avenida María Cristina on Plaza de España to enjoy the night! It starts on 9:30 pm with music and at 11:30 pm there is a pre-show of 10 minutes to warm up engines and prepare for 12 chimes and 12 grapes, one step less to welcome New Year! Since 2014 it has been a tradition in Barcelona, with a show full of music, color and pyrotechnics in front of the magical fountain of Montjuic. Having ate the 12 grapes and drunk champagne, you can go dancing, cause Barcelona will be full of bars and discos to celebrate New Year. All depends on your musical tastes and your budget. It is very important to make reservations in advance, otherwise you can run out of tickets or have to pay more than double.
