From September 21 to 24, Barcelona holds its grand annual Festival La Mercé 2018, with lots of culture, music, dance, circus and street arts, free for all the audiences. The festivities are organized in honor of the Patron Saint of the city, la Mare de Déu de la Mercè (the Virgin of Mercy). The key places to celebrate the Festival la Mercè 2018 are the Gothic Quarter, the Ciudadela Park, the Barcelona Forum, the María Cristina Avenue, the CCCB and the Montjuïc Castle. In addition, there are places like Parque de la Trinitat or la Fábrica de Fabra i Coats that have joined the Festival la Mercè. The Piromusical Show is one of the most celebrated events for children and adults at la Mercè 2018. This show takes place on the last day of the Festival, hypnotizing those who see it because it combines fire, water and music. Thousands of people come to see the water dance of la Font Màgica de Montjuic, the explosion of fireworks in a wonderful golden flourish of la Mercè. Besides the concerts and shows that take over squares and streets for free and for all the public, la Festa del Foc is also very prominent. This event consists of popular correfocs (literally, running fire), which take place around Vía Laietana. There are two a day of fire shows, one is and quiet adapted for children and another one held at dusk for adults.
Each year, the Festival la Mercè brings a guest city, this year it´s Lisbon, accompanied by The Night of Fados with a wide variety of rhythms and styles. The objective is to show the contemporary artistic scene of a city that shares the same cultural and civic values as Barcelona and to create bonds between both capitals. The closing event of La Mercé 2018 is held on September 24 and called la Cavalcada de la Mercè, accompanied with dancing giants and big heads, which bring together thousands of locals and visitors along the central streets of Barcelona.
